Trafalgar Square hoardings

Gail Astbury was asked by Greater London Council to prepare some hoardings to hide the construction works at Trafalgar Square in 2002. The pedestrianisation works redirected traffic away from the upper part of the square and opened access from the National Gallery to the fountains and Nelson's Column. The paintings were in acrylic, with glitter and varnish, onto 2m x 2m boards. Each board had a dominant colour - from yellow through to red - which en masse gave a spectrum of bright colour to what is usually a dull space. Thematically the paintings depicted people in the air, caught at the moment of suspension above the ground. There were also images representing the occupants of the main buildings that surround the square: Canada House, South Africa House, St Martins in the Field Church, the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery. The paintings were on display for 4 months so formed part of the christmas decoration of the Square that year.
